Double DQ in Highland Park
Officials Prevalent in Decisions

Posted: July 26, 2009

Saturday night was a busy one for boxing in the state with three shows scheduled. Highland Park, Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo hosted amateur cards.

In Highland Park, Fight Club Proving Grounds and Al Low brought boxing to the local recreation center with a good crowd for what turned out to be fourteen fights. Sadly, anticipated bouts for Craig Lewis, Leandre White and Latonya King never materialized.

As exciting as the fights were, the drama often came from the officials’ actions. Four bouts were stopped early including a double disqualification handed out in the final action of the night and one bout disallowed completely.

Even before the first fight started a fight between Craig Lewis and an unidentified boxer was nixed because officials believed the opponent was not up for the fight, but was reluctant to admit it. That fighter’s coach strongly disagreed but the chief official prevailed and the fight was never made.

In a rare double DQ, referee Gerald White put a stop to Kronk’s Franklin Hardy and Magic’s Johnny Owsley in their debut 195 pound bout after having to get physically between the two on a second break command.

Arkell Boyd made the switch from Crowell to Kronk and won a decision over Hamtramck’s Andriy Stankevych at 145 pounds. Boyd, a southpaw puncher, has not been around much of late, reportedly due to a spleen injury, but came back strong and was more effective punching in the clinches.

After a loss last week in Detroit, Dominique Rocha recorded a win at 145 pounds over awkward Gerry Robinson of Butzel After two early wins, the Butzel fighter has dropped two in a row drawing blatant fouls in both.

Downtown Boxing’s Theodore Wiggins remains undefeated with two fights under his belt, winning over Butzel’s Degerald Barnett at 141 pounds.

The mohawk-sporting Cortez Todd, of Downtown Boxing, won his 80 pound bout over Motown’s Angel Quintero. Todd improved to 7-3.

Emmanuel Steward and former pro Hilmer Kenty were not only in attendance, but Kenty seconded in the corners of Kronk fighters Orkheese McGraw and Franklin Hardy.
