Preliminary Action Concludes in Denver

The first two days of ring action has concluded at the combined National Senior Open and Junior Olympics championships being held this week in Denver, Colorado.

This is the first time the Senior Open tournament, also called the U.S. Championships, has been combined with the JO championship and also the first time either tourney has been held in Denver.

Michigan fighters have faired well through the preliminary rounds.

Monday Prelims

Kronk’s Joseph Bonas made his national tournament debut in spectacular fashion with a stoppage of Philadelphia’s Karran Richardson in a 154 pound Junior Olympics fight. The end came midway through the third round.

Zach Shamoun won by walkover over Tennessee’s Roger Hilley at 114 pounds in the Junior Olympic tournament. This is the first major tournament for the teenage boxer since exchanging his Casa De Boxeo jersey for one that says Kronk earlier in the year.

Austin Watkins of Joe’s Boxing lost his bid for gold by a wide margin at the hands of California’s Hector Luna in a 110 pound junior male bout.

Sudana Fowler lost by wide margin to Alexandria Cardenas of Texas at 132 pound in the senior female division.

Tuesday Prelims

Brandon Love won a close points victory over Dylan Mason of Minnesota at 145-lbs.

2009 National Golden Gloves champ Jordan Shimmell defeated fellow Midwest Region boxer Robert Jakebson of Chicago in day two preliminary action Tuesday. A rematch with Iowa’s Donovan Dennis, who Shimmell won a split decision over at last months National Golden Gloves competition in Salt Lake City, is next up in the quarterfinal round.

Casa De Boxeo’s Andrecia Wasson stopped her opponent, Meredith Della Guistina, midway through the fourth round of their 152 pound bout while Chasity Funseth lost a close 9-8 decision to Jody-Ann Weller (residence was not reported for Guistina or Weller) at 125 lbs, both in the Senior Open tournament.

Shamoun lost to Carlos Chavez of California, after winning by walkover a day earlier.

Four boxers from Marquette saw action in the first two days also: Ricky Alvarez won an easy decision (24-0) over Alabama’s Michael Santos at 132 lbs; Manuel Lopez lost to California’s Emmanuel Robles at 141 lb; DeRae Crane lost a close decision at 178 pounds to Jeff Spencer of Colorado and Greg Carter lost by points at 152 pounds to Errol Spence of Texas.
