The National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions is less than a month away and Michigan's open boxers have been hard at work training for the event.

The Detroit franchise contested six open class bouts over the weekend and had three uncontested fighters. There were no entries in the two lightest weightclasses: 106- and 112-lbs in any of the Michigan tournaments this year. While a handful of non-advancing bouts will be contested later this month as part of a club show and possibly three more at an even later date yet-to-be-announced, the open class fights have concluded and the Detroit team is set.

The rest of the lower peninsula, with the exception of Monroe County in the southeast corner of the state that competes as part of the Toledo Ohio franchise, is divided into two districts: Western and Eastern Michigan, both of which concluded their open tournaments the weekend prior to Detroit. In those districts, the winners and runners-up advance to the state championships to determine who will continue to the nationals. The state tournament is scheduled for April 17-18 in Wyoming, near Grand Rapids.
