Kronk Fundraiser Wednesday
Posted: March 24, 2009

Tomorrow, the famous and the not-so-famous-but-well-to-do will gather in Birmingham for what is billed as the first annual fundraiser of the newly formed Kronk Gym Foundation.

The latest public effort by Emanuel Steward to raise money for the Kronk takes place with a dinner and auction at the Townsend Hotel in Birmingham on Wednesday at 6 pm. The purpose is to raise money to pay for a new Kronk Gym and to provide “mentoring and tutoring” to youth in Metro Detroit.

The event promises celebrities like event co-chair and current heavyweight champ of the world Wladimir Klitschko, Sugar Ray Leonard, and, of course, local legend Tommy Hearns. Singer Aretha Franklin will celebrate her birthday at the fundraiser and HBO’s Jim Lampley will emcee. Sportssummary has confirmed that event co-chair and Board of Directors member Lennox Lewis, who is also scheduled to be honored during the evening, will not be in attendance.

The Kronk amateur team will reportedly be present, Emanuel Steward said last month.

Past efforts to save the Kronk included a black-tie fundraiser tied with a pro-am fight card at Detroit’s Fisher Building three years ago. The event raised a lot of interest but donations reportedly fell off after an out-of-the-blue donation promise of over $1,000,000 was made by the online Motown Legends Casino. That promise never materialized and Steward was stuck with the bill for the extravagant event.

Tickets for Wednesday’s dinner and auction range from $200-500 and are available online at kronkgymfoundation.org or by calling (248) 917-1793.
