Louis Mitchell's second annual amateur boxing program drew an SRO crowd and featured 12 mostly-action bouts in Detroit's Northwest Activities Center, March 14. Mitchell had a good show last year. This one was even better. In fact, the intensity and quality of the matches--all evenly matched--generated one of the two best shows this reporter has seen in the last five years.

Ring announcer Lisa Cunningham announced tributes to longtime trainer Walter Smith and Melvindale middleweight Mickey Goodwin, both of whom died within the last month. There will be a trophy to honor Smith given out on a yearly basis and to recognize Goodwin, a Heart of a Champion Award was presented to longtime trainer John Brown. Brown, who recently had double-bypass surgery, wanted to attend, but had his brother stand in.

The bouts contained nary a single knockdown or stoppage, but featured full-throttle energy bursts from all involved.
