Packer Resigns MI GG Position
Posted: January 1, 2009

Dave Packer’s busy schedule got lightened an hour ago as he stepped down from two time-intensive positions with Michigan amateur boxing.

Packer resigned his position as director for both the West Michigan and Michigan state Golden Gloves (GG) tournaments, effective at midnight on Wednesday. It is a position he has held for 26 years, but stepping down will allow him more time, he said, to spend with his wife and grandchildren and continue his efforts to establish a permanent Golden Gloves center in Grand Rapids. Packer’s decision was announced in a press release issued earlier in the week.

Pat Schmidt will step up to fill the Tournament Director spot starting today. Schmidt served the past eight years as the tournament’s Chief Official.

Packer will continue to serve as Director/CEO of the Michigan GG franchise, handling daily operations and serving as a representative to the national Golden Gloves of America. The Grand Rapids native also stepped down as the state LBC President at midnight due to term limits. He served in that capacity for ten of the last 12 years. Gary Richards, who served as LBC Treasurer until midnight, took the reigns of amateur boxing in the state at 12:01 am.
