Hearns to Fight at Boxing Mecca
Posted: November 29, 2008

He will enter the ring, undefeated, at the most famous of boxing venues – Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Ronald Hearns (21-0-0, 17 KO) will have turned 30-years old three weeks earlier, when he climbs thru the most famous ropes in the boxing world in the most famous of places on January 17, 2009.

It will be Hearns’ first time at the Garden.

It is a venue rich in boxing history and one that his famous dad, Tommy “Hitman” Hearns, never fought in. Not once in 67 fights, spanning 29 years. The elder Hearns seemed to prefer the second most famous boxing locale, Las Vegas, where he fought fourteen times. Father and son will enter Madison Square Garden together in January.

The Light Middleweight will face the UK’s John Duddy (25-0-0, 17 KO) in the first 2009 fight at MSG. Hearns, just shy of six months older than Duddy, will have a 3-4 inch height advantage while, according to Boxrec, having a one-inch reach disadvantage. Duddy is the current IBA Middleweight title holder.

The significance of the venue is not lost on the younger fighter.

“This is the biggest fight of my career,” Hearns told Sportssummary on Friday. “It will take me to a new level.”
