River Rouge Boxing Club is less two young boxers this week as tragedy involving a handgun took the life of one boy and will forever change the life of the other.

Eleven-year old Korie Merriweather was accidentally shot and killed by his 12-year old friend at Merriweather’s River Rouge home on Tuesday afternoon. According to published media reports, Merriweather was driven by his grandfather to the police station before being taken to Wyandotte Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

The older boy, who reportedly had been arrested at least once before, was formally charged by county prosecutors and was in custody at the Wayne County Detention Center.

The boys lived on the same street, were friends and fellow classmates at Detroit’s Boynton Middle School and both were scheduled to have their first amateur bout at tonight’s Downtown Boxing Club show at the Riverside Hotel in Detroit.
