Ann
Arbor Tourney Starts Friday
Posted: August 17, 2008
The
James “Lights Out” Toney 1st Annual Invitational Tournament
starts Friday and ends with championship competition on Sunday.
The
state’s newest amateur boxing tournament is hosted by Ann
Arbor’s A-Square Fight Club, which has held several big venue
club shows in the few years since its inception including a well
attended show at the field house at nearby Eastern Michigan University.
The
tournament is named for Michigan native James “Lights Out”
Toney, former 3x champion whose life was peripherally depicted in
the 2004 movie “Against the Ropes” loosely based on
the life of Toney’s one-time manager Jackie Kallen, also of
Michigan.
A-Square
trainer/owner Eric McGuire reports that Toney will attend the three-day
tournament that is open to any open class boxer in all weight classes
and divisions. McGuire reported recently that response from clubs
in several states as well as Canada has been good and he expects
a good experience for boxers.
The
event will be held at the hockey rink located at Veterans Memorial
Park, 2150 Jackson Road in Ann Arbor. For more information, call
(734) 686-0298.
