Splitting his workout time between two gyms is how amateur boxer Drew Morais has spent his summer. And the work paid off as the novice boxer faced his latest opponent, this time in the caged arena.

The Joe’s Boxing Club fighter, who sports a 3-2 amateur boxing record, made his MMA debut August 9 at Wyandotte’s Yack Arena as a fighter for Monroe MMA. The event – alternatively billed as the “Duel in Downriver 2” and “Back at the Yack” it was the second mixed-martial arts show at the Downriver venue in the past couple months.

Unlike boxing, within the fence Morais was able to put his years of high school wrestling to use against his mohawk-sporting opponent Sean Isbell. Morais took the fight to the ground in each round where he dominated the action, winning triple scores of 30-27 for a unanimous decision win.

In a show of support for their teammate, Pro boxers Wade Tolle, Jr., Ryan Wilburn and Derick Minton were in attendance.
