Boxing
Comes to Royal Oak
Posted: August 5, 2008
Revised: August 16
The
latest offering from Heavy Hitter and CLIP, with the assistance
of licensed promoter Ron Remus, is set for Thursday in Royal Oak.
The card has changed – as they always do – and so has
the venue. But the card remains mostly competitive.
Darryl
Cunningham (9-2-0, 4 KO) is featured in the main event facing Adrian’s
Dan “Flawless” Wallace (9-4-0, 3 KO) at super middleweight.
Wallace lost his last three fights – two by knockout in early
rounds and one UD after eight rounds – with his last win a
year ago this month. Cunningham, by contrast, has won his last two
and six of his last eight with the latest a clash with Chris Grays
(who appears in the co-main of the evening) in June.
In
the co-main event, Alexis Hloros (5-2-2, 5 KO) should have little
difficulty with Chris Grays (7-15-0, 2 KO) who has lost ten of his
last eleven fights. Hloros is coming off a four-win streak and impressively
all five of his wins have come by way of knockout in the first or
second round.
Canadian
Andre “Gorgeous” Gorges (1-0-0, 1 KO) has been matched
with Alan Moore (1-3-0, 1 KO) of Indianapolis, whose debut was his
only fight to go the distance. Two of his losses and his single
win ended by TKO with his last fight a first round loss in January
of this year. Moore replaces Cleveland’s Jamal Khan who had
a slightly weaker record of 0-3 and fell off for reasons not reported.
Tommy
Simaan (2-1-0, 2 KO) is returning to the ring for the first time
in more than five years to face Dustin Cooley (0-1-0) of Battle
Creek. Cooley apparently impressed promoters before losing to their
charge (Andre Gorges) in the first minute of Gorges’ debut
in June. Simaan, 34, lost his last fight in June of ’03 to
debuting Herling Lopez at Joe Louis Arena. His prior two fights
both ended in his favor by way of technical knockouts in the nine
months since his September 2002 debut.
Pete
Cantu (13-6-1, 8 KO) has won his last six ring appearances and should
find no real challenge in a rematch with Jaime Castellano (4-17-0,
1 KO). The two mid-Michigan fighters fought last month in Bay City
with Cantu winning by unanimous decision (as were four of his last
six wins; the other two were knockouts). Castellano has lost his
last three bouts with a KO victory of Marcus Olivas coming between
three earlier losses.
Rich
“Super” Power (1-0-0, 1 KO) is scheduled to make his
second ring appearance (he debuted at a June 20 Fort Wayne show,
winning a second round TKO) to face Andy Coronado (0-3-0) of Muskegon.
Chris
Hancock (2-0-0, 1 KO), reportedly of Detroit, takes on Cleophris
Glover (2-7-0, 2 KO) in a heavyweight match. Both of Hancock’s
prior fights – in March and May – occurred in Memphis,
Tennessee – making this his first hometown fight. While Glover’s
two wins both came by knockout they were early in his pro career
– his third and fourth fights – he lost his last six
fights, although his April 2007 loss to Mike Jones was recently
changed to a “no contest” by the Michigan Boxing Commission
(before they became the Michigan Unarmed Combat Commission, which
happened earlier this year).
The
action happens Thursday at the Royal Oak Music Theatre, starting
at 7pm. Tickets are available at www.neptix.com or by phone at (248)
977-9067.
