Detroit
“Bad Ass” Concept is Unique
Posted: July 15, 2008
Open
class amateur boxers intending to turn pro this year will have a
unique opportunity later this month.
Three
promoters are continuing a standing relationship to bring professional
boxing to the state with a unique tournament-style amateur event
that will culminate with a professional boxing contract.
Promoter
Greg Ahrens is teamed with Heavy Hitter Promotions and Carlos Llinas
International Productions (CLIP) to bring “Detroit Bad Ass”
to Detroit’s Fort Wayne at 6329 West Jefferson. None of the
three is registered with USA Boxing and/or are unable to obtain
club membership so Motown Boxing Club of Warren is the official
sanction holder, according to Michigan LBC Secretary Jer McLaren.
Open
class amateurs in weight classes from 132 pounds and up will compete
in three monthly elimination fights, in July, August and September,
with the winners to be offered a promotional contract and then make
their pro debut in October. All fights will be held at the historic
Fort Wayne – a pre-civil war fort long abandoned as a military
base – with the pro show packaged for showing on Fox Sports.
Promoter
Ahrens said that all open class boxers are welcome, even if they
are not intending to turn pro yet.
“We
want the toughest fighters around,” Ahrens said. “The
guys that really want to fight.”
Ahrens,
who also promotes mixed-martial arts shows, said that he expects
MMA fighters to compete in the novice division’s open cast
fights. “We want the toughest guys around,” he emphasized.
The
promotional contract will be offered by CLIP. The terms, value and
length of the contract were not provided and requests for further
information were not answered.
The
first round in this elimination series takes place on Friday, July
25 at 8:00 pm. Ticket information was not provided.
