New Kronk Holds First Grand Opening

REVISED

Kronk once again has a presence in the city of Detroit.

Kronk coach Majed Fradi is opening the latest incarnation of the Kronk Gym on West Warren on Detroit’s far westside. Located between Piedmont and Grandville, the new gym occupies what used to be two storefronts located across from the Instinct Bar & Grill.

Fradi told Sportssummary at a grand opening on Saturday that he owns the new gym and Emanuel Steward owns the Kronk name. While little information was presented, it appears to be the plan that members of the Kronk boxing team would begin training at this location temporarily. Kronk amateurs, and coach Javan Hill, report that Steward still intends to open a gym to replace the original location on McGraw, which the city’s recreation department closed in 2005 due to budget problems.

Neither Steward nor any Kronk pro boxer attended what turned out to be the first of two planned grand openings. Steward and Hill have been at training camp in Austria for the past couple weeks. Fradi announced, through an informal interpreter, that another grand opening would be held on July 15 which Steward would attend.

The gym, which is scheduled to be completed and open to the public on Monday, contains a boxing ring, four heavy bags and two speed bags in an area smaller than some other local gyms. Converting the two stores into one and readying the location for its new role as a boxing gym took roughly four months, according to Ali Alfatlawi, who is believed to be Fradi’s nephew.

Currently, members of the Kronk team are split among several area gyms including the Detroit Jungle Gym and the Downtown Boxing Club.

Editor's Note: We incorrectly listed the coach's name in our original posting. This revision corrects that.
