Lawsuit
Filed in Contreras Injury
Posted: May 30, 2008
PART ONE
A
lawsuit was filed Thursday in Lansing on behalf of Juan Contreras,
a 12-year old boxer, who was injured during a club show in March.
Contreras
was participating in his second amateur contest on March 15 at the
Chenery Auditorium in Kalamazoo. Early in the third and final round,
his opponent came on strong with a flurry of head shots and Referee
Sean Curtain stepped in giving Contreras a standing 8-count. During
the count, Curtain waved off the bout and called in the ringside
doctor. Even before Crown Boxing Club Coach Ali Easley could quickly
enter the ring carrying a stool, the young boxer collapsed in the
referee’s arms.
The
civil suit makes several allegations including: that Contreras should
not have been allowed to fight because he was not a registered boxer
at the time of his injury; that Contreras’ training was insufficient
to allow him to compete; that Contreras was improperly matched by
weight and experience and that an ambulance should have been in
attendance to speed medical care.
Much
of the text of the 21-page complaint filed Thursday in the 30th
Circuit Court for Ingham County, in Lansing, re-asserts allegations
against nearly a dozen individuals or companies in Michigan as well
as USA Boxing in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
Part
Two will be posted on Saturday.
