Detroit Golden Gloves Get Underway

Twenty boxing clubs are competing at this years Detroit Metro Golden Gloves, being hosted once again by Casa De Boxeo and held at the Gibraltar Trade Center South in Taylor.

Of the seven preliminary fights held Friday night, four bouts were contested at 165-lbs in the senior division.

River Rouge Boxing’s Richard Barrios won over Eastside Boxing’s Michael Maynard; Stacy Bruner of the Detroit Boxing Jungle defeated Coleman Young Recreation Center’s Bronco Macnear, Motown’s Gabriel Rivera fell victim to the University of Michigan’s Regalito Menchaca and Motown’s Byron Gaskin turned the tables on the U of M by beating Adam Risko.

In his first fight since a traffic crash while returning home from the Senior Open championships near Traverse City in December put boxing on hold, J’Leon Love stopped his opponent, Motown’s Anthony Robinson. The Kronk boxer won the open division 178-lb match.

In two super-heavy (201+ lbs) bouts, A-Square’s Ryan Rawls earned a win over Mike Harrell of Butzel and Walter Burns of Dynamic defeated Kronk’s James Medlock.

The tournament continues with semi-finals this afternoon (Saturday) and finals on Sunday.
