After some months of anticipation – and one postponement – boxing fans are poised to witness the professional debut of one of Michigan’s best amateur boxers tonight.

Domonique Dolton is a familiar name and face across the state in the amateur ranks, having fought in roughly ninety bouts and amassing a nearly 76% win ratio, according to records maintained by Sportssummary. Tonight, fight fans will be witness to the start of Dolton’s professional journey. If he lives up to the promise as many expect, it will be something one can boastfully tell their children and grandchildren years from now: “I saw Domonique make his debut.”

In an unusual move, Dolton will be fighting a 6-rounder for his debut instead of the usual four, and his opponent, 32-year old Lucas Rodas (3-3-0), has more than a couple fights under his professional belt. The Indianapolis fighter won his first three fights, had a no-contest that resulted from two accidental headbutts to his opponent followed by three straight losses.

The event will take place at Bert’s Ballroom (2739 Russell in Eastern Market district) in Detroit on a 3-pro, 5-6 amateur bout Pro-Am card. Other local pro boxers scheduled are Ed Williams and Larry Carter and amateurs Leandre White and Erick DeLeon.

White, part of the Kronk trilogy that until tonight included Dolton along with amateur J’Leon Love, is considering turning pro later this year and DeLeon is receiving much attention – including the praise and mentoring of Kronk patriarch Emanuel Steward. Amateurs from Ohio and Toronto, Ontario have been pre-matched against Detroit-area boxers.
