Schmidt, Woodward Fall; Others Advance

After
two days of ring action, 79 boxers have fought and advanced at the
U.S. Nationals and 79 more have been eliminated, including two from
Michigan.
MLK-NMU's
Ryan Schmidt was stopped in the fourth round of the 125-lb bout
by Derrick Murray of St. Louis, Missouri and NMU's Termaine Woodward
lost 11-6 to Wichita, Kansas' Jeff Strum at 141-lbs, ending their
medal bids.
Two
NMU fighters, Jesse Carradine at 132-lbs and DeRae Crane at 178-lbs
both advanced after bouts Monday. Carradine won a very close 15-14
decision over Mt. Vernon, New York's Chazz McDowell and Crane earned
a stoppage in round two over Miami's Abdulah Dobey.
The
two Kronk fighters in the mens divisions, Leandre White and Craig
Lewis, both won their preliminary rounds to advance. White, at 152-lbs,
won a 14-10 victory over Las Vegas' Arturo Crespin and Lewis, at
201-lbs, won a tight decision over the U.S. Army's Joe Guzman.
Preliminary
action continues today and tomorrow with semi-finals to be contested
Thursday and championship rounds Friday.
