Thirteen Boxers Compete at Arnold Classic

Forty-nine amateur boxers won contested bouts over this past weekend at the Arnold Classic boxing invitational championships held in Columbus, Ohio. Five of those were from Michigan. Three Michigan fighters were among thirty-three boxers that were unopposed and five won silver medals.

Tournament officials report that 168 boxers from across the country entered the competition this year, which is the third year that boxing has been included in the twenty-year old event that started as a bodybuilding competition but has grown into a nearly-twenty sport event.

Infinity Boxing Club had a good showing at this year's tournament: Aron Agustin won in the 15-16 year old, 132-lb division, Drake Filippis, won the 15-16 age division at 154-lbs., Willie Fortune won in the Open division at 165-lbs. and newcomer Brandon Colston won the 152-lb Novice title.

Teammates Anthony Barnes, Jourdan Moody, Dean Smith and Alex Suarez came home with silver medals.

Nicholas Intgroen of Kalamazoo won gold in the 152-lb Novice division.

Paul Soucy won an unopposed gold medal in the Masters division. The 69-year old Soucy is the owner and head trainer of Dynamic Boxing in Westland.

Gabriel Garza of Warriors Boxing and Daniel Smith of Dynamic were also unopposed. Garza in the 11-12 division, 132-lbs and Smith in the 15-16 super heavyweight division.

Dynamic's Giovanni Modoro won silver at 152-lbs.in the Novice division.

The Infinity Boxing Club had a special guest associated with their team at this year's event. Hasim Rahman, Jr., the son of the former champion, boxed - and won - as a team member under the guidance of coach Glenn Wilson.
