Windsor’s Josh Cameron Reaches 100 Milestone
Posted:October 10, 2007

When he entered the ring three weeks ago in Kalamazoo, Josh Cameron realized that he was about to fight his 99th amateur bout. When the Border City fighter told Coach Josh Canty they both knew that his next fight would have to take place back home in Canada.

That milestone fight took place September 29th in front of friends and family at Border City’s “Club Show XV” in Windsor, Ontario, Canada where the 17-year old has trained for the past six years.

Cameron’s opponent for the big event was East Windsor Boxing Club’s Karim Ebead. The fight was a rematch with identical results – Cameron won the 141-lb bout by unanimous decision, improving his record to an approximate 80W-20L.

The significance of 100 fights, especially at such a young age, cannot be fully understood or explained since records are not kept by USA Boxing, in America, or by the Canadian counterpart organization. However, a review of Sportssummary records – which includes frequent inspection of Michigan boxers’ passbooks at shows – indicates that relatively few climb through the ropes that often during their amateur career. When Cameron’s age is considered and the fact that Canada’s starting age is three years older than Michigan’s, the achievement is more evident. In Canada, youth must be at least eleven years old to box.

Of his roughly 80 wins, Cameron has stopped perhaps ten of his opponents while none of his roughly 20 losses have come by RSC. During the past six years, Cameron has won several titles including the current Canadian National, Ontario Provincial and Mexican Challenge champion.

Cameron says his sights are set on the Ontario Provincial tournament later this month and, if he prevails, he hopes to win his second national championship next month – this time in the senior division, a week following his 18th birthday – and with that a shot at the 2008 Olympics.
